This project was a marina frontage lot facing southwest.
A Long narrow ocean type lot afforded emphasis to the front and rear elevations.
This 5200 square foot house was designed with a post tension
slab foundation to accommodate an unstable man made marina.

View from rear deck into the living room. The vaulted
ceiling is created by custom fabricated glu-lam beams to a height of twenty
five feet.
The glass block wall sections are from Pittsburgh Corning
Glass. The 8x8 glass blocks are designed with a solar bronze coating on the
out side to cut down the amount of UV rays. The desired effect was to afford
plenty of natural light as well as to protect the clients furniture from UV
fading from this western elevation exposure.

This project located in Joshua Tree, is about a two and
a half hour drive east of down town Los Angeles, California. It is in the
high desert north of Palm Springs. Elevation is approximately 3500 feet above
sea level. This project was an Architectural Record award winner for 1990.
“The Monument” won a 1st place award in the vacation and summer
home category.
“The Monument” interior Views
Like some 3-0 cubist triptych. the house rises above the
rugged rock out croppings. Irregular window and door openings were site built
by Silver Strand Partnership. They were intended to recall the crevices and
views between the surrounding rocks. The exposed aggregate interior flooring
is carried outside so that when the doors are opened the house becomes more
of an open pavilion that takes advantage of the desert breezes.
